Day to Day Itinerary:

This itinerary is subject to changes and adjustments based on seasonality and local operations.

Shangrila

  • Arrive and check into the hotel in Shangrila at any time, airport pick up is available on this day until 3pm.
  • Free time to explore the cobblestone streets and shops of Shangrila’s old-town by foot.
  • We’ll kick things off at a local Tibetan restaurant to meet your trip leader and fellow travelers, within walking distance of your hotel.

Driving: None

Hotel: A boutique guesthouse in Shangrila old-town

Shangrila > Hada Village

  • Depart Shangrila and head deep into the mountain canyons to Hada, a beautiful small village nestled inside a green river valley.
  • After a local lunch we’ll visit a winery just up the hill from Hada village, with the best valley views around. Lounge on the patio and sample the only white wine’s we’ll be trying on this trip.
  • Tofu-Making: At a local home, we’ll be taught by our hosts how their family has made tofu since ancient times. You’ll be making your own tofu to enjoy over dinner with a fantastic selection of local seasonal dishes.

Driving: 2.5 hours from Shangrila to Hada Village.

Hotel: Local Guesthouse in Hada Village.

Hada Village > Cizhong Village

  • After breakfast, we’ll depart for a rustic hillside village hidden completely off the tourist track that hasn’t changed in decades. It’s so old, in fact, it’s the oldest and most preserved Lisu minority village left in Yunnan. We’ll explore the 300 year old houses and see local life like you never have before.
  • Local Lisu minority lunch: The real highlight here is the food, a local cured ham leg porridge that stews for 4 hours before being served. One of our favorite meals of the trip!
  • We’ll head further up the canyon into Cizhong village, with one of the oldest cathedrals in China founded by a French missionary in 1867, where locals still practice catholicism. From France, he also brought a type of wine grape that has since died out there – making Cizhong the only place in the world with this grape. Among the cathedral and grape vines deep within the canyon, you’d forget you’re in China.
  • Wine tasting session and dinner at the winery: Relax on the patio (with wine), walk the vineyards (with wine), and learn about how grapes are picked, harvested, and processed (with wine), while enjoying their red wine that you’ll literally only find here!

Driving: 2.5 hours from Hada Village to Tongle Village, and then 1.5 hours from Tongle Village to Cizhong.

Accommodations: Local guesthouse in Cizhong Village.

Cizhong > Shangrila

  • After a leisurely morning, we’ll start our drive back to Shangrila, stopping for lunch and a tasting at our 3rd winery situated deep inside a mountain canyon with Tibetan vibes.
  • Free Time in Shangrila: There’s a lot to do here, and we’ll let you follow your curiosity. Window-shop for awesome local handicrafts, or check out the local tea and coffee scene. Before dinner, we’ll visit the biggest Tibetan prayer wheel in the world. This is all walking distance from your hotel.
  • We’ll arrive in Shangrila just in time for dinner. We’ll try big staples like: Tibetan “Pizza”, highland barley yogurt, yak meat, and Tibetan craft beer.

Driving: Approx 3 hours from Cizhong to Shangrila, with stops at a winery and river viewing along the way.

Accommodations: Shangrila Boutique Guesthouse within the old-town.

Shangrila

  • Enjoy breakfast at a local family home and try Tibetan milk tea, homemade yogurt, and freshly baked highland barley sweet bread. This is a very unique and authentic experience you don’t want to miss!
  • Take in the ultimate views of the incredibly vast Shangrila grasslands where you’ll see horses and yak graze and local Tibetan villages skirt the mountains.
  • BBQ Lunch: Large slabs of white stone are heated up and brought to your table where we’ll grill a selection of local meats and veggies, plus melt-in-your-mouth tofu, directly on the stone.
  • Songzanlin Monastery rests above a pedestrian-only village that features a handful of authentic Tibetan temples. We’ll climb up to see the largest Tibetan Monastery in Yunnan, dating back to 1679. Its grand appearance, full of frescos, sculptures, and immaculate architecture offers sweeping views of the nearby highland landscape from a viewpoint 3300 meters high.
  • Enjoy dinner with a side of culture in a Tibetan restaurant that features a local performance.

Driving: We’ll be in and out of the car for about two hours while we visit the nearby grasslands and monastery, otherwise just short drives in and around Shangrila.

Must-See Tour Highlights:

Spend 6 days exploring the ancient villages and landscapes of Yunnan’s Tibetan autonomous region on this food-forward adventure. This tour is recommended to those who enjoy wine, Tibetan yogurts and milk teas, and all manner of rich soups and stews, as the region’s grasslands and canyons create the perfect conditions and appetites for all of the above. You’ll try dozens and dozens of plates while stopping at wineries and enjoying areas that are far off the tourist path.

The nature of this trip is remote and off the beaten path, which means it’s perfect for those with an adventurous spirit. It also means longer bus journeys and visits to small, remote villages with fewer conveniences and shopping. The entire tour takes place at high altitudes up to 3,300 meters above sea level.

If you’re looking for a more relaxed journey with free time exploring Yunnan’s popular ancient towns and villages, then our trip from Dali to Lijiang along Yunnan’s Tea & Horse Road will be more appropriate.

Shangrila Multiday Trip Leader

Our Trips Hit Different.

The Lost Plate Style: Our trips are designed to give you a hassle-free and comfortable experience, focusing on authenticity and unique activities without the luxury price tag. We explore off the beaten path spots, eat authentic local food at family-run mom ‘n pop restaurants, and take care of all logistics so you can relax.

Our Itineraries are personally designed by our founder (psst, that’s her wine tasting at one of this trip’s wineries). We do not “plug and play” typical itineraries like everyone else. Instead, we go the extra mile to take you to places that WE would travel to, making sure you get a unique (and delicious) experience.

Our Guides & Trip Leaders are hired and trained by us and lead our trips regularly. This means you’ll get a professional experience led by a team that is passionate about what we do (and eat).

Frequently Asked Questions:

Private trips can be arranged based on availability. This is ideal for families, large groups, or guests who don’t want to join with other travelers. An additional private trip fee will be charged (which is waived for groups of 8 or more). Simply contact us to book so we can check availability.

We are happy to make simple customizations to private trips, such as the start time/date or the duration of the trip.

Beyond that, we generally do not arrange customized tours. We work very hard to create our tour routes and build strong relationships with our vendors to ensure the quality and service they provide. It’s also important for us to share the stories of each destination and vendor that we visit. If your request involves visiting a destination or vendor that we don’t have an existing relationship with, we will politely decline.

Long car rides, hours spent wine tasting, and remote ethnic villages contribute to this specific tour not being child-friendly. We encourage families with children to consider our trip from Dali to Lijiang, Yunnan instead.

If you still prefer this trip, booking a private trip for your family is the best option. This allows you some added flexibility during the itinerary to make sure nothing starts too early/late and so you have time to rest when needed.

Travelers with children should always contact us before booking so we can provide detailed prices for you.

Due to the nature of this trip, all guests should be in good health, be able to handle high altitudes, and be able to be on your feet for 2-3 hours at a time. This trip is unable to accommodate anyone who requires mobility assistance such as a wheelchair or walker.

Yes! Our join-in trips are perfect for solo travelers because it gives you the ability to travel with others and the advantage of being able to try a large variety of food.

All of our join-in trips have a minimum of 4 people. Our website will accept your solo booking and we’ll keep in touch to let you know when the minimum number of people has been met. If it’s not met, and we are unable to reschedule you to another date that works for you, we will provide a full refund for your booking.

The single occupancy fee for this trip is $243 USD. This is necessary because accommodation is the largest cost of the entire trip, and it is designed to be split by two people. While we do our best to make this reasonable (the single occupancy fee doesn’t cover the entire gap), it is necessary for us cover this cost.

Feel free to contact us at any time if you’d like us to check your dates of interest and we’ll let you know if anyone else has booked the trip or if there are nearby alternative dates.

If you know anything about Lost Plate, you know that you’ll never go hungry. All meals are included on this trip. You can expect simple yet hearty breakfasts, plus lunches and dinners that offer a huge variety of dishes in large quantities. We often visit family-owned restaurants that specialize in one type of cuisine or dish, and there’s a reason why we visit every single place. Our goal is to make food the highlight of your trip!

Meals include local beer, soft drinks, and bottled water.

All dietary requests must be communicated at the time of booking. When booking online, you will have the opportunity to let us know if you have any dietary requirements or special requests. Please use the following information to understand if this trip is right for you.

This tour can accommodate vegetarian travelers, including those who are pescatarian and those who do not eat beef, pork, seafood, shellfish, and/or mutton. However, there will not always be direct substitutes for every dish that we try on the tour.  Instead, we’ll order extra vegetarian items, and will likely always include potato in this region of Yunnan. Please note that every stop we visit during the trip does use meat in their kitchen. It is important for us to know how flexible your restrictions are (ie; are you able to have meat broth used for hotpot).

We can also accommodate gluten-free travelers, but keep in mind that you won’t be able to enjoy some of the staples in the region such as wheat noodles and Tibetan breads. Soy sauce is also commonly used in Chinese cuisine, so it will be good to know how strict you are.

This tour cannot accommodate vegan travelers.

This tour also cannot accommodate severe allergies as we do not have full control over the preparation for your food. Travelers that don’t eat nuts are welcome, but kitchens do use nuts and cross-contamination is possible.

If you have any questions not answered here, please contact us prior to booking.

Yes! Feel free to arrive early or stay after the trip. We are able to pass on our special hotel rates to you so you don’t need to switch hotels as well. Just let us know your dates and we will check rates and availability for you. Please note that airport pick-up/drop-off is not available if arriving/departing outside of our itinerary.

We ask all travelers to independently apply for their tourist visa to China. We typically are not arranging your entire trip to China, so this gives you flexibility on the dates and duration for your visa application. We are able to provide documents such as your trip itinerary and hotel confirmations to aid with your visa application. The price of obtaining this visa is not included in the tour price.

Visa policies change often and vary by nationality. You should do your own research to understand if your nationality will require a visa, and what the process and timeline is for your nationality.

  • Your tourist visa for China.
  • Transportation/flight tickets to and from Yunnan. This gives you the flexibility to arrive and depart when you would like, on the flights of your choice.
  • Shopping and activities during your free time.
  • While basic travel insurance will be provided by Lost Plate, coverage is not all-encompassing. Each guest should obtain their own health and travel coverage.
  • Optional gratuities for your guide.

We’ve rated this trip an activity level of 3 out of 3. All guests should be in good physical health and should be able to be on your feet for at least 2-3 hours at a time. The entire tour takes place at high altitude, with elevations ranging between 2,000m to 3,300m above sea level. This trip is not recommended for those who might be sensitive to high altitudes. as you will feel more tired and winded when you arrive until your body adjusts.

The nature of this trip is remote and off the beaten path, which means long bus journeys and nights spent in small towns/villages. Less conveniences will be available and guesthouses will be more basic than our other trips as large 4 or 5 star hotels do not exist here.

This is high-altitude mountain country. The weather here can be extreme, and can change quickly. It will also change throughout the trip as we travel through different altitudes and landscapes.

Winters are sunny, dry, and cold. Lower altitudes will feel comfortable during the day, while higher altitudes can dip well below freezing at night. The mountain sun will feel strong when its out.

Summers are known as “rainy season,” where showers are always possible. This keeps the temperatures very pleasant all summer long, and rain generally does not last for days at a time.

All seasons offer their benefits and there really isn’t a bad time of year to visit this region of Yunnan.

We’re excited to provide all of our trip guests a self-curated travel guide to China. This detailed PDF includes information about the following:

  • Visa policies
  • Mobile plans, internet, and VPNs
  • Essential mobile apps for payment and travel
  • Cultural overview & etiquette
  • Language guide
  • Health & safety
Approximately 1-2 weeks before the trip begins, we will host an online pre-trip briefing and Q&A session for all travelers joining your trip. This will cover important information you need to know before arrival, a review of your itinerary, and time for Q&A. It will last approximately 30 minutes, and a recording will be available for those who are unable to attend the live session.
