Why People Choose Our Trips:

Meet Your Resident Food Nerds at Lost Plate Food Tours

Designed and Led by Lost Plate.

We  personally curate every trip down to the finest detail (and meal), and all of our trips are led by our team. This means you’ll get an experience that lives up to the hype by a team that is passionate about what we do. It also means we aren’t afraid to push boundaries that other companies can’t, making on-the-fly adjustments and getting off the familiar tourist track to make sure you have nothing less than a great trip.

Food Forward.

A trip isn’t great if you’re not always thinking about your next meal. This is exactly how we design our itineraries – we find the best culinary experiences and meals and then place everything else around it. This means you get the best of everything: the sights and the bites. We can always guarantee that you won’t go hungry – or thirsty. Did we mention meals include beer?

Skip the Tourist Traps.

No shopping. No gimmicky souvenir shops that pay guides commissions. No cheesy performances that attract droves of tourists. We travel with our guests like we travel by ourselves, which means we cut out the crap and provide a truly local and unique experience. We visit sights and attractions that are worth it, which doesn’t always mean you’ll find them in your guidebook.

Discover the Unknown.

Imagine discovering hidden caves in the countryside outside Xian for a night. Exploring the endless tea fields outside Chengdu for an afternoon.  Getting access to invite-only wineries in deep Yunnan canyons. Or taking a 45 minute jeep ride over mountain passes to arrive in what’s known locally as “Heaven on Earth.” We make the extra effort to take you places that you won’t find on any other itineraries. At the end of the day, you’ll be posting Insta pics like no-one else ever has.

No need to endlessly scroll through lists of hotels. Stop trying to find random blogs that recommend the hole-in-the-wall restaurants. “I took this trip immediately after Lost Plate’s other Yunnan adventure (Dali to Lijiang) and the two are very different, but both fabulous. Highlights included dinner at the winemaker’s house in Cizhong and of course Yubeng, which has views that simply cannot be beat. Even if you’re not a regular hiker (I’m not), consider doing the waterfall hike. When you add up the hotels and transport and tours and personal assistance (especially with those pesky Covid tests and health codes), never mind the unending food and drink, I can’t even believe what a value Lost Plate provides. Unless you are a fluent Chinese speaker, you’re not likely to have a more varied, fun, and delicious time in Tibetan Yunnan than by taking this tour.”

“From food, wine, places to people who live there. Had such a great experience. Food, wine and scenery. The places visited were further apart so be prepared for three hours drive. Believe me the drives between each places are worth it because the views all around you are breathtaking.”

“What a memorable trip! I’m not usually one to book vacations with tour companies but Lost Plate has me a convert! Everything was so easy, all I had to do was show up! Especially as a parent traveling alone with 2 kids and my Chinese skills are less than proficient, this made our vacation a breeze. I will go on every trip that Lost Plates offers, if I can. From booking to accommodations, activities, tours, timing, transportation, our sweet and knowledgeable guide, Noble, EVERYTHING was spot on. Don’t look any further, just put your vacation in the hands of Lost Plate.”

“This is my second multi-day tour with Lost Plate and I hope it won’t be my last. I saw all the top sights, ate like a queen, and kept my all-important health code green. The last bit might not be the most exciting part of travel but it is the most worrisome if not take care of. I know most people come to Xi’an to see the terracotta warriors and while they are spectacular, there’s so much more to Xi’an and on this tour you’ll get to experience it. The food can be the true highlight in Xi’an, at least when you’re with Lost Plate. It’s hard to choose a favorite meal but I think the evening and morning food tours of the Muslim quarter were my personal favorites. The best part of being with a group is that you can order (and taste) far more dishes than if you were on your own or with just one other person. Plus they’ve done the advance legwork to find you the best places to eat. Highest possible recommendation for anyone who wants the convenience of a tour/guide but an alternative to a big bus tour.”

My partner and I loved every single moment of this tour. The itinerary took us through breathtaking scenery off the beaten path, it felt like we went on an adventure! Our guide was incredibly attentive and helpful, and we had a lot of fun spending time with her and the rest of the crew. The food was absolutely delicious and we all looked forward to our next meal despite being still full from the previous one! We’ll definitely join more Lost Plate tours while we live in China.

I had already been on their evening food tours in Chengdu and Xi’an, and these longer trips had come highly recommended by a friend. It absolutely lived up to her hype. This is an off-the-tourist-trail adventure for sure, which might not be for everyone, but was exactly what I was looking for. The food was always delicious and the travel and accommodations were as good as the areas allowed. I would strongly recommend Lost Plate for an uncommon adventure!

An Amazing 4 Days in Sichuan

“Just go. I mean, at a minimum you should go on the evening food tour but if you have the time to spend four days in Sichuan, I can’t imagine how you could spend your time better than to put yourself in Lost Plate’s hands for the duration. Every sightseeing activity was worthwhile, every meal was delicious and many of them were at places you’d be hard pressed to find on your own unless you’re traveling with a Chengdu native. You don’t have to worry about a thing-they help you with all the details, including abiding by all of China’s travel regulations. You can just sit back and enjoy the ride and make new friends in a small group of fellow-travelers. This is my first multi-day trip with Lost Plate (I did an evening tour with them in Xi’an) but I don’t plan for it to be my last.”

A Great & Tasty Trip!

“The trip was fantastic, food offered great (you would never find those spots by yourself). The small group was also very nice. I really enjoyed the trip – not only I managed to visit some places which are a must-see (like pandas or Leshan Buddha) but also places I didn’t think of visiting before (like a tea plantation). The guide was also very knowledgable and helpful and her English was very good.”

“This was definitely one of the top three trips of my life. Our group of strangers soon became friends due to the detailed planning and care put into the itinerary and activities. I am usually an extremely independent traveler, so I was shocked by how much I enjoyed this trip, but the activities are perfectly curated so that the group time is well spent and there is free time each day for one to go out and explore on one’s own. What makes this tour so special is the care and effort put into it by each member of the team; you can tell they truly want you to have an amazing experience. The sights were unbelievably gorgeous, the food adventures sooooo delicous, varied, and soooo much fun, and the itinerary included so many optional activities (bike rides, hikes, bookstores, cafes, crafts, cooking…) that perfectly complement to all that delicious food. I also loved that while the focus was on food, it wasn’t just about eating: we explored markets, participated in cooking classes, and learned about various food-related traditions. This trip is worth every penny! I will definitely be joining again.”

“I loved the way that the trip was planned with many different types of activities in addition to delicious food. There was a tie-dye activity, cooking classes, historical tours, biking and hiking, and also options for enjoying the night life as well. It was truly a beautiful and wonderful experience packed with fun and good food! Timings were flexible and every need was accommodated. Our guides were also very knowledgable, friendly, and fun! It was truly a dream trip for me.”

Fabulous Food & So Much More

“I highly recommend this tour. The food is amazing. I tried so many local dishes that I had never seen or heard of before — all of them delicious. On top of that, we managed to spend time with pandas, hang out at a traditional tea house and a cool bar, pick and roast our own tea in the countryside, and visit the Big Buddha in Leshan. Our guide Daisy took very good care of us and answered all the random questions we threw at her.”

Best Food in China, Greatest Tour and Guide

“My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our week-long adventure through Yunnan with Lost Plate! Our tour guides Brian and Evon were fabulous. It was so nice to take out all the guess work of traveling to a new place and we were able to fully trust them with getting us to great food and places to see. They took us to some spots that we’d never really find on our own. We’d love to do one of their other multi-day trips in the future!”

“Our first time to Yunnan and a great introduction to the best part of China. As ever with Lost Plate Food Tours, there was a well thought through and executed itinerary with some off the beaten places (and dishes) that you’d never find in your own. Highlights included the mountain bike, the cycling around Shaxi, and all of Dali!”

“We had a magical 8-day trip through Yunnan with Lost Plate Food Tours with two families. Our Guides Ruixi and Alison went above and beyond to help us – even before the tour officially started! Overall, something I loved about this trip was how relaxed it was. You didn’t feel you were being rushed from place to place, and there was enough downtime built in that you could chill out. If you wanted to explore, you could go ahead. If you needed some relaxation time in your room, that was fine too. As a food tour primarily, I can say we were not at all disappointed! Something that made this trip special for me included getting to try regional foods that I would never have been aware of without their expertise. The guest houses at each location were fantastic. Beautiful, spacious rooms that are locally owned and operated. I thought the range of activities we got to do really catered to a range of interests. From shopping and market tours to cooking classes, hiking, tie-dyeing and clay cat sculpting, our families were engaged and interested throughout.”

“Everything on this trip was so well curated by Lost Plate: gorgeous, small local yet comfortable guesthouses; excellent choices of local food establishments, some more formal, some street food; terrific & knowledgeable trip leaderswho shared lots of information about the places we visited and the cuisine we ate; a well-thought out pace — plenty of free time (but with suggestions of what to do) and some worthwhile activities as a group; and beautiful Chinese countryside. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Lost Plate and this tour to anyone!”

“My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed the 4-day Lost Plate tour of Chengdu and Leshan. We saw new and unforgettable parts of China and had experiences we never encountered before, like picking and roasting our own tea leaves. Thanks for opening up another side of China to us, Lost Plate!”

“Amazing food at local, hidden restaurants that you probably wouldn’t find yourself. Authentic, delicious food! Great sight-seeing. Stayed in an amazing cave hotel and got to see the terracotta warriors!”

“The distinctiveness of “Lost Plate” is to combine a trip that’s off the beaten path and extremely delicious local dishes. The trip was very well organized and interesting, I enjoyed riding a bike on the city wall and visiting the Terracotta Warriors. The night in a cave and the bonfire were such a fantastic experience. About food, it’s very difficult to choose my favorite, because the market food tour, the street food tour, the tuk tuk food tour, the local restaurants….all the dishes were delicious and eclectic ! It’s my second trip with Lost Plates and I have never been disappointed. Thank you Lost Plate and see you soon for another trip!”

“My partner and I went on the four day tour of Chengdu. Our excellent guide brought us to a range of authentic eateries that we would never have found ourselves as well as a visit to the pandas, an old tea house, a tea farm and the giant Buddha. Usually tours pad things out but this was enjoyable (and tasty especially if you like it spicy) throughout, thoroughly off the beaten track, and our guide was a joy to spend time with.”
