Day to Day Itinerary:

This itinerary is subject to changes and adjustments based on seasonality and local operations.

  • Arrive and check into our hotel in Xian, airport/train station pick up is available on this day until 3pm.
  • Lost Plate Evening Food Tour by Tuktuk – This food tour won the #1 Food Experience in the world by TripAdvisor. If it seems like a bold move to start out the trip so strongly, it’s because it is. End the night at a local brewery with city wall views a short walk back to your hotel.

Driving: Approx. 1 hour from the airport to the city center.

Hotel: 4-star hotel located in the heart of Xian, within the ancient city wall and walking distance to many sights.

  • Terracotta Warriors (1 hour drive): You can’t go to Xian without seeing this. In numbers, the 8000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses, and 150 calvary horses took 700,000 people 40 years to complete, starting when the Emperor was 13 years old, and finishing 2 years after his death to accompany him into the afterlife. In numbers it sounds like a whole lot, but to see it for yourself is another thing entirely.
  • For lunch we’ll have some seasonal Shaanxi comfort-food favorites (think stews, bings, and seasonal veg) so you can explore more of the heart of Shaanxi cuisine.
  • The City Wall: We know, we know, you’re surrounded by walls all the time, they hardly seem like something to make a point of looking at. But have you ever rode a bike on top of a wall that is also one of the largest ancient military defensive systems in the world? Xian city walls are thicker than they are tall, but are still high enough to offer views of moats, battlements, archer ramparts, and the ancient city. It’s also the only city wall left in China that is fully intact.
  • Enjoy Yangrou Pao Mo and tear local pita bread up into small pieces, and then the staff will take it away. When it returns, it is Yangrou Pao Mo. The addition of a savory lamb soup and chunks of tender lamb meat is soaked up by the pita bread in a synergistic feat.
  • You’ll top off this unique meal with local organic ice cream, with unique flavors like black sesame, tofu, chili oil, or fresh walnut.

Driving: Approx. 1 hour each way to/from the Terracotta Warriors, then short drives around town.

Hotel: Same as previous night.

  • Morning Food and Market Tour – Sunday is market day! The heart of the Muslim quarter is its local market. Learn about the vendors and chefs that make up this community, who are a vibrant part of continuing the legacy of this famous market that has stood the tests of time. It’s something you’ll have to taste to believe. We’ll eat from breakfast through lunch!
  • The Great Mosque: Islam has been practiced in China for 14 centuries, culminating in the Great Mosque, the largest in all of China. Its style and presence are a unique marriage between two traditions, across 20 buildings and 5 courtyards.
  • Visit Xian’s storied Drum and Bell towers are within walking distance of your hotel. You’ll get the chance to visit both towers and enjoy the views!
  • Airport/Train Station Drop off: We will arrive at Xian’s north high-speed train station around 4pm and the airport around 5pm, so you need to schedule a later departure.

Driving: Approx. 1 hour to the airport.

Must-See Tour Highlights:

Highlights

Lost Plate’s Xian Evening Food Tour by Tuktuk was awarded by TripAdvisor as the #1 Food Experience in the World.

Explore the Drum & Bell Towers and discover why they are in the geographic center of the walled city.

Experience Xian's Mulsim Quarter & Great Mosque which is a unique marriage between two cultures.

Visit the Terracotta Warrior army complete with 8000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses, and 150 calvary horses that took 700,000 people 40 years to complete.

When many think of their country’s history, they think decades or centuries. China thinks in millennia, and no city holds a greater memory than Xian. The earliest human remains here? Half a million years old. First status as a capital city? 13,000 years ago – roughly 10,000 years before the first bricks of Giza’s pyramid were made. Xian re-invents what the word “old” means.

Other accolades include being the first Imperial capital of China, the Terracotta Warriors, and holding the only fully intact city walls in all of China. And inside those walls, thirteen dynasties rose, lived, and fell. It’s so jam-packed with history, that when Xian’s Metro Line 2 was constructed, they discovered 130 ancient tombs and over 200 artifacts.

In a sense, if you want to taste 5,000+ years of history in China, you have to go to Xian. In another, much more fanciful sense, you haven’t seen China if you haven’t visited Xian with Lost Plate.

We have personally curated this 3-day food and sightseeing tour in and around Xian, and it’s jam-packed with all of our favorite eats.

The nature of this trip is relaxed. There are no long van rides and no strenuous activities. Since it is only 4 days, the itinerary is quite full but there will be time to get off your feet.

Our Trips Hit Different.

The Lost Plate Style: Our trips are designed to give you a hassle-free and comfortable experience, focusing on authenticity and unique activities without the luxury price tag. We explore off the beaten path spots, eat authentic local food at family-run mom ‘n pop restaurants, and take care of all logistics so you can relax.

Our Itineraries are personally designed by our founder (psst, that’s her introducing ingredients at one of our morning food tour vendors). We do not “plug and play” typical itineraries like everyone else. Instead, we go the extra mile to take you to places that WE would travel to, making sure you get a unique (and delicious) experience.

Our Guides & Trip Leaders are hired and trained by us and lead our trips regularly. This means you’ll get a professional experience led by a team that is passionate about what we do (and eat).

Frequently Asked Questions:

Private trips can be arranged based on availability. This is ideal for families, large groups, or guests who don’t want to join with other travelers. An additional private trip fee will be charged (which is waived for groups of 8 or more). Simply contact us to book so we can check availability.

We are happy to make simple customizations to private trips, such as the start time/date or the duration of the trip.

Beyond that, we generally do not arrange customized tours. We work very hard to create our tour routes and build strong relationships with our vendors to ensure the quality and service they provide. It’s also important for us to share the stories of each destination and vendor that we visit. If your request involves visiting a destination or vendor that we don’t have an existing relationship with, we will politely decline.

We generally recommend join-in tours for children aged 8+. With that said, we ask parents to use their own judgement to determine whether the itinerary of this trip is appropriate for their children without impacting the experience of other guests. Due to the schedule each day, it is important that we stay on time and there may not always be an opportunity for you to take breaks or go back to your hotel to rest.

Due to the limited capacity on our join-in trips, discounts are not generally provided for children. This is always determined on a case-by-case basis and depends on the size of your family, the ages of your children, and how many hotel rooms you will require.

Booking a private trip for your family is always an option, based on availability. This allows you some added flexibility during the itinerary to make sure nothing starts too early/late and so you have time to rest when needed.

Travelers with children should always contact us before booking so we can provide detailed prices for you.

We welcome all travelers, but ask that guests use their own judgement to determine whether the itinerary of this trip is appropriate without impacting the experience of other guests. We do not recommend this trip for anyone who is unable to be on their feet for 1-2 hours at a time, or requires mobility assistance such as a wheelchair or walker.

Booking a private trip is always an option. This gives you some added flexibility during the itinerary to make sure you have extra time when needed during the day.

Yes! Our join-in trips are perfect for solo travelers because it gives you the ability to travel with others and the advantage of being able to try a large variety of food.

All of our join-in trips have a minimum of 4 people. Our website will accept your solo booking and we’ll keep in touch to let you know when the minimum number of people has been met. If it’s not met, and we are unable to reschedule you to another date that works for you, we will provide a full refund for your booking.

The single occupancy fee for this trip is $118 USD. This is necessary because accommodation is the largest cost of the entire trip, and it is designed to be split by two people. While we do our best to make this reasonable (the single occupancy fee doesn’t cover the entire gap), it is necessary for us cover this cost.

Feel free to contact us at any time if you’d like us to check your dates of interest and we’ll let you know if anyone else has booked the trip or if there are nearby alternative dates.

If you know anything about Lost Plate, you know that you’ll never go hungry. All meals are included on this trip. You can expect breakfasts at your hotel (plus our morning food tour on one morning), plus lunches and dinners that offer a huge variety of dishes in large quantities. We often visit family-owned restaurants that specialize in one type of cuisine or dish, and there’s a reason why we visit every single place. We promise the food will be the highlight of your trip!

Meals include local beer, soft drinks, and bottled water.

Please Note: Some of the restaurants we visit are Muslim-owned establishments. Therefore, beer cannot be offered in every restaurant we visit.

All dietary requests must be communicated at the time of booking. When booking online, you will have the opportunity to let us know if you have any dietary requirements or special requests. Please use the following information to understand if this trip is right for you.

This tour is not recommended for vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free travelers. Cuisine in Xian relies heavily on beef, chicken, pork, and wheat-baed noodles and breads (not rice). Many of the eateries we visit are small, family run, and very specialized, so we do our best but on this tour there just aren’t a lot of substitutes. Travelers that don’t eat meat or gluten simply won’t have items to eat at some stops. For vegetarian diets, we recommend you check out our Beijing, Chengdu, and Shanghai tours as they will have more options for you.

This tour also cannot accommodate severe allergies as we do not have full control over the preparation for your food. Travelers that don’t eat nuts are welcome, but kitchens do use nuts and cross-contamination is possible.

If you have any questions not answered here, please contact us prior to booking.

Yes! Feel free to arrive early or stay in Xian after the trip. We are able to pass on our special hotel rates to you so you don’t need to switch hotels as well. Just let us know your dates and we will check rates and availability for you. Please note that airport pick-up/drop-off is not available if arriving/departing outside of our itinerary.

We ask all travelers to independently apply for their tourist visa to China. We typically are not arranging your entire trip to China, so this gives you flexibility on the dates and duration for your visa application. We are able to provide documents such as your trip itinerary and hotel confirmations to aid with your visa application. The price of obtaining this visa is not included in the tour price.

Visa policies change often and vary by nationality. You should do your own research to understand if your nationality will require a visa, and what the process and timeline is for your nationality.

  • Your tourist visa for China.
  • Transportation/flight tickets to and from Xian. This gives you the flexibility to arrive and depart when you would like, on the flights of your choice.
  • Shopping and activities during your free time.
  • While basic travel insurance will be provided by Lost Plate, coverage is not all-encompassing. Each guest should obtain their own health and travel coverage.
  • Optional gratuities for your guide.

We’ve rated this trip a level of 1 out of 3. While there are no strenuous activities required during the itinerary, you will need to be on your feet for a few hours at a time while visiting some destinations, such as the Terracotta Warriors, the Ancient City Wall, and the Drum & Bell Towers.

If you were to draw a straight line between Beijing and Chengdu, you’d find Xian roughly halfway in the middle. The capital city sits in the middle of Shaanxi province at an elevation of about 400 meters / 1312 feet. It’s bordered to the south by the Qingling mountain range which bleed into Sichuan, and to the north by Gansu, Ningxia and Inner Mongolia.

Xian has a temperate climate characterized by hot summers, and cold and dry winters. Spring and fall sit right in the middle, yet longer periods of rain or dust storms can occur.

As an aggressively expanding Tier 2 city, air quality is not always great but has been improving. On a clear day, the city offers views of the Qingling mountains just 50km from the city center.

We’re excited to provide all of our trip guests a self-curated travel guide to China. This detailed PDF includes information about the following:

  • Visa policies
  • Mobile plans, internet, and VPNs
  • Essential mobile apps for payment and travel
  • Cultural overview & etiquette
  • Language guide
  • Health & safety tips
Approximately 1-2 weeks before the trip begins, we will host an online pre-trip briefing and Q&A session for all travelers joining your trip. This will cover important information you need to know before arrival, a review of your itinerary, and time for Q&A. It will last approximately 30 minutes, and a recording will be available for those who are unable to attend the live session.
