6 Cultural Tips to Understand Before Visiting & Eating in Cambodia

Smiling Chef in Kitchen

Before you dive into Cambodia’s rich history and flavorful cuisine, there are a few things to know that will help you feel more at ease and blend in like a local. From cultural etiquette and temple manners to dining customs and daily interactions, this quick guide will help you navigate Cambodia with confidence and respect.

Cuisine

Cambodian food is all about balance – bold flavors, fresh herbs, and simple ingredients. Rice and rice noodles are the staples, making most dishes naturally gluten-free friendly. Instead of salt, fish sauce adds savory depth to almost everything.

Meals usually come with herbs and condiments on the side, so you can season to your taste. Food here is generally less spicy than Thai cuisine, but chili and pickles are often within reach.

Water

Tap water is not safe to drink in Cambodia, so we’ll provide bottled or filtered water during meals and travel. Hotels will also supply bottled water. We regularly check our restaurant partners, so the water and ice they serve are safe. During your free time, stick to bottled water, and always use your best judgement.

Breakfast

Start your day like a local! In Cambodia, breakfast is a savory affair with rice noodles or rice paired with meat, a favorite way for locals to fuel up. Hotel breakfasts usually offer both local favorites and simple Western options. Coffee lovers will be happy to know that cafés are easy to find, and most hotels have coffee ready every morning. Instant coffee is also popular and often provided in rooms. Whether you go for fresh fruit, local pastries, or your favorite brew, mornings here are a great mix of familiar comforts and local flavors.

If you are in Phnom Penh, skip your hotel breakfast and join our Morning Market and Breakfast Tour by Tuk-Tuk to see how Cambodians start their day. Discover hidden neighborhoods, sip on local coffee, and experience the vibrant Khmer morning culture firsthand.

Bars & Nightlife

After a packed day of exploring, there’s always time for a nightcap! Your hotels are centrally located, making it easy to stroll or hop on a quick tuktuk ride to some great bars and nightlife spots. From laid-back pubs to lively dance clubs, you’ll have plenty of options nearby. Just remember to take it easy – Cambodia’s heat and humidity can sneak up on you, so sip responsibly and enjoy your night!

Did You Know?  In Cambodia, most ice is made with filtered water and delivered by ice-makers, so it’s safe to use in drinks at restaurants. Just another reason to enjoy that cold refreshment with peace of mind!

Tipping Culture

Tipping in restaurants isn’t common in Cambodia, but some upscale (or touristy) spots may add VAT and/or a service fee to your bill. Menus will usually mention this if that’s the case. Tipping is more common in the tourism industry, particularly for guides and hotel staff. In some rural areas, tips may be politely refused due to local customs.

Toilets

In Cambodia, public restrooms often feature squat toilets and may lack privacy/doors, especially in older or rural areas. It’s a good idea to carry your own tissue, hand sanitizer, or even some wet wipes, as these are usually not available. Cleanliness can vary, so for a more comfortable experience, use restrooms in modern cafés, restaurants, or upscale shopping malls when possible.

By understanding these cultural nuances, you’ll be better prepared to navigate daily life in Cambodia with ease and respect. Embrace the local customs, stay curious, and enjoy every moment in this warm and captivating country.
